    My wife Toni and I would like to register our appreciation with Rotary and the City Central Branch specifically for its support of Storm the Stage over the last 4 years and in particular the last 3 years when our daughter (Elisabeth) has been involved. The opportunity to be involved in such a well run event presents participants with experiences they may not otherwise get. Not only is it challenging to the entrants through the ‘gentle’ application of competitiveness, it brings with it the opportunity to learn from well credentialed and experienced judges, whom we have found to be encouraging and nurturing in their adjudications and back stage conversations. Add to this the wonderful experience of meeting like minded young people with similar ambitions it amounts to a pleasurable experience. I know Elisabeth has appreciated all that she has learnt from the event.
    To Paul Sayer and his group of hard workers we say “well done”. In times of economic crisis it is difficult to drum up enthusiasm for the Arts as it can possibly be seen as frivolous when hardship is being experienced in other fields.
    Sadly Elisabeth’s competitive association with the event has come to an end but she is richer for the experience and I am sure she will be an avid onlooker in years to come depending on where her ambitions take her.
    Thank you all so much.
    Phil and Toni Hickey (and Elisabeth)

    I am Rtn. John Ricky Gootam will be visiting Hobart from 28th till May 3rd. I wanted to come to the meetings and exchange our club banner with your club when i am there in Hubort. Could you get back to me about meetings times and how to get there and also wondering if you could give me about 10 mintues to speak about our club and our activities. Thank you!

  • Jo HEaly

    Hi There,
    Just happened to be surfing and found your website. Could I ask what the person on as “sketch” does at your weekly meeting? Also it appears you have a roster for taking the dinner money – this is a great idea. Many thanks, Jo Healy. In-coming Treasurer, Rotary Club of Canberra South

  • admin

    Hi Jo

    Thanks for your interest.

    We have 2 types of member sketch – international and vocational.

    At most meetings a member will be rostered to do a 5 minute international sketch. They can tell the club about any rotary project from somewhere around the world (including Australia). Members tend to either seach on the internet or use one of the rotary magazines. We find that these sketches can be inspiring and interesting. They also give members a professional development opportunity by speaking in front of the club.

    Once a month at our committee meetings (which we have instead of a normal club meeting) a member is rostered for a vocational sketch. This 5 minute sketch could be focused on the member’s current job or cover an overview of their life story and how they have come to be in their current vocation.

    Finally, yes we roster our money collector, which works well. The money collector is also responsible for bringing a raffle prize and is not required to pay the admin fee that night.

    Hi Warwick
    Having focused on my children for the last few years I am now seeking adult conversation etc. My friend Sharyn Hills from the Kingborough Club mentioned you were a family friendly club and having seen the website I’m interested in coming along. Are the Monday night meetings at the New Sydney child inclusive? Would love to hear from you.

    My name is Sam MacIntyre and I currently attend school at Hutchins. I am interested in attending the NYSF (National Youth Science Forum, http://www.nysf.edu.au), due to my passion for maths and science. As a recent immigrant to Australia, I would also like to take this opportunity to see more of the country. In order to apply to the NYSF, I require sponsorship (in the form of financial support/fundraising support etc). Therefore, I would be very grateful if you would consider sponsoring/partially sponsoring me to participate in this fantastic opportunity. Thank you for your time.

    Dear Hobart Rotary club

    I am a resident of West Hobart and would like to apply for the Rotary Peace Fellowship. I think the deadline is soon and I would be keen to hear back from you ASAP about what is possible.

    I am deeply committed to assisting the development of peace and the Rotary Peace Fellowship would give me the opportunity to undertake my Masters in Peace / Conflict studies which I am very keen to do. I have experience in the field, and not having a masters degree is a barrier.

    Your assistance is appreciated.

    Dear Sir/Madam:
    I am a member of a Rotary Club in Allentown, Pennsylvania USA (approx. 60 miles from Philadelphia). I shall be traveling in Tasmania from 30 Jul – 4 August. My time in Hobart is only 30 & 31 July and have inquired if I could attend the Newtown club’s regular meeting on Tuesday 31 July (awaiting a response).

    I did not see your listing under Tasmania, rather during my search of Rotary clubs in Sydney. I see your club meets Mondays 6:30 p.m. onwards. Although on 30 July I have a dinner engagement (time unknown at the moment) I would quite enjoy meeting a few of your members. I’m staying a few buildings away from your meeting site – at the Mercure Hobart, 156 Bathurst St. – although I see that you have an evening of bowling planned. Since I don’t know where the bowling venue is in correlation to my hotel…meeting you before my dinner is probably not time effective. However, depending upon when bowling ends, perhaps I can meet up with you there. Thoughts? I don’t bowl but I could cheer you on. I presume dinner ends by 8:30ish. Let me know if you think meeting up is possible. I shall also have a standard (flag) of our Club with me.

    Thank-you for your consideration.

    Kind regards,
    Karen El-Chaar

    Hi Karen El-Chaar,

    I am very sorry I missed you email. It was caught by the spam filter. We are having a social night tomorrow at one of our members with Pizza & Wii. This is on the Eastern shore (Rose Bay) and will not be close to your hotel.

    I would love to meet up with you at sometime during your stay. Monday night will almost certainly not be possible. I am not working Tuesday afternoon and there may be one or two others who may be available if that time suits you better. I may be able to make time during the week if you like.

    For a full list of all our club meeting times and venues in Tasmania see: http://www.rotary9830.org.au/meeting.htm The list is sorted by day of the week. Most meet on Mondays, but the following are in the Hobart area for Tuesday onwards:

    Western Shore:
    * Moonah – Sublime Restaurant – Tuesday 12:30pm
    * North Hobart – Black Buffalo – Tuesday 6pm
    * Salamanca – Hobart Function Centre – Tuesday 7am
    * Sullivans Cove – Blue Skies Restaurant – Tuesday 7pm
    * Hobart – Hotel Grand Chancellor – Wednesday 1pm
    * Rotaract Club of Sandy Bay – Searson & Buck – Thursday 6:30pm

    Eastern Shore:
    * Bellerive – Bellerive Yacht Club – Tuesday 6pm

    I will be at the Rotaract Club of Sandy Bay on Thursday.

    Please feel free to call me.

  • Frans Antonides

    Dear Rotary friends,

    I’m writing to you on behalf of my family, the Antonides family from Holwerd in The Netherlands. I’m a member of the Dutch Rotary Club Dokkum, district 1590 and we’re planning a trip to Australia this December 2013 for 4 weeks over the Christmas period.

    There are a number of reasons for our trip, firstly because my brother lives in Australia, and secondly because our eldest 2 boys (aged 14 and 11) are now old enough to really remember this trip when they’re older, and thirdly because their 7 year old brother is currently still fit enough to travel that far, as he suffers from a mitochondrial metabolism disorder.

    Our plan is to travel down from Cairns to Sydney in 14 days in a camper van. Once arrived in Sydney we would like to rent a family sized house where we are planning to celebrate Christmas and explore Sydney together with my brother and his family. After that we’ll celebrate New Year in Melbourne where my brother lives.

    The majority of the trip has been organized, but we’re still looking for a house to rent in or around Sydney, which is the reason why I’m writing to you.
    In Holland we have a Rotary magazine in which members advertise their holiday homes for renting out to other Rotary members. I wondered if you have a similar magazine and I’m hoping that someone would be able and willing to help us?

    We’re looking for a house available from 23-28th December, that can sleep at least 8 people and has a minimum of 4 bedrooms. It also needs to be fairly suitable for a wheelchair and in an ideal world – especially for our youngest son – it would also have a swimming pool.
    This has proven to be rather difficult, because most houses will only rent out for a full week, not a mid-week, and because of the price. Our budget is maximum 750 dollar per day.

    If you can help, we’d be very grateful and I look forward to hearing from you.

    Kind regards,

    Frans Antonides

    Noted your Club’s interest in the plight of bees. Rotary Club of Caulfield (Melbourne)has been running a small education campaign on five things which people can do to help maintain healthy local bee populations .If you would like a copy of the DL flyer and A-4 poster to use,please let us know at the above address. The Club is also a registered beekeeper with two hives with Hive Hosts. The honey will be shared with the host and the remainder gifted to Club Speakers and to entities which distribute food parcels to those in necessitous circumstances.

    Do the Hobart Rotarians offer any graffiti removal like they do in Sydney? They work with offenders who are doing community hours to carry it out? I have a task for a friend who needs help.
    Thank you.
    Colette 0434 383 117

  • Warwick

    Hi Colette. I do not think so – at least none that I am aware of. I know the day release prisoners paint great designs on things around Hobart CBD.
    I will get someone to look into it and get back to you.
    Regards, Warwick

  • Katie Wright

    I am writing to you as a Down Syndrome Tasmania committee member, in the hope that you may be able to afford us some assistance in running a BBQ during our annual Step Up for Down Syndrome awareness walk on Parliament Lawns on Saturday Oct 11th from around 10am to 1pm. We will provide all food and beverages.

    Lindisfarne Rotary have helped us in the past but unfortunately cannot this year.

    I realise it is late notice but we need to get permits sorted asap.

    If you are able to help or have any suggestions I would be most grateful

    yours sincerely

    Katie Wright

  • Warwick

    Hi Katie,
    I will pass this on to our fundraising person. It very unlikely however that we will be able to do this as we just held a BBQ yesterday.

  • Makaila Higham

    My name is Makaila Higham and I am a 4th year Batchelor of Education Health and Physical Education student at University of Tasmania.
    For one of my units I am required to design a community based inclusive physical activity program. For my program I have decided to focus on active transport (i.e walking, cycling etc) and I am basing my program around a local primary and high school in the Glenorchy area. I am contacting you to see if your organisation/business would be interested in getting involved with any donations. This could include any promotional items i.e pens or stationary that could be used as incentives for students or informational flyers/brochures etc. I would like to be able to get some bikes and helmets for the primary school, I understand that this is a big (end very expensive) ask but any sort of contribution towards this would be appreciated.

    Look forward to hearing from you.
