Second Bite has been operating in southern Tasmania for six years and is about to extend operations into the North of the state. The aim of the organisation is to identify wastage or surplus in the food chain (from the ‘paddock to the plate’) and redistribute this to those in need. They serve around 60 non-profit organisations and provide food equivalent to 50,000 meals a month. Approximately 60 volunteers help the organisation on a regular basis and many of those are linked to Rotary. For example the Rotary Club of Sandy Bay collect unsold fruit from Salamanca Market each week and deliver to the Salvation Army. This is seen by their members as a real ground floor effort to help their local community. Second Bite are looking for help from our Club to provide some admin support in tasks such as collating and analysing statistics and providing a link between Rotary and the organisation.

Greenlight is a Learner Driver Mentor Program based at Goodwood Community Centre. The program is government funded and since March 2010 has provided a car and a mentor to those people that live in the northern suburbs who do not have access to a car or a person to teach them to drive. The program currently has 8 mentors and approximately 40 people on the waiting list to be mentored. The program is looking for more volunteer mentors who to be eligible need to have had their full license for at least 2 years, are willing to provide a police check and have a spare hour now and then to help out. The participants need to show they live in the northern suburbs, they don’t have access to a car to practice in, and have had at least 2 professional lessons.

Our Assistant Governor Tracy Dance updated us about various things happening in the District, including: that the Kangaroo Bay is likely to hand its charter and that this charter may be transferred to a new club in the Richmond area, a possible new Rotaract starting in Claremont, a possible new Rotary club starting in New Norfolk, projects arising out of the Victorian bushfire fund. District Public Relations is applying for a grant at the moment, GSC Ontario team has been selected and that Follow the Yellow Boat Road raised over $250,000. She also highlighted a proposed joint zone project being discussed by Zone 2 Presidents. Current ideas include funding house building in Sri Lanka or purchasing Disaster Aid Australia boxes. If member have ideas they would like to put forward please let Anita know soon as the decision will be made in January 2012.

The evening started with greetings and drinks. Our president, Anita Orchard, welcomed everyone to the meeting. She gave an overview of the club for those not familiar with it. The president of Salamanca, Tony Colman talked about his club and asked for help with the gift wrapping fundraiser they will be holding soon.
Thanks for everyone for organising food.
Jill did her international sketch on the Horn of Africa, as this is where the fundraising from this evening will be going.
Rebecca organised the games for the “Minute To Win It”. The games included:
• Turn into mummy with toilet paper
• Keep 3 balloons in air
• Thread 10 needles
• Line up 6 coat hangers
• Balance nail on a piece of string
• Oreo biscuit balance on forehead and flip into mouth
We then ended the meeting with two heads and tails.

We raised around $380 and we decided to give $500 to the Horn of Africa Appeal.
