BBQ Fundraiser at K&D

On Saturday we held a fundraiser BBQ at K&D Derwent Park. After problems with the BBQ we began to sell sausages at 10:30am. The weather was extremely gusty and created problems with the BBQ. However, the guys at K&D kindly put up wind shield which proved very effective. Later it began to rain so our fundraising effort was much less than we hoped.

Group 2 Dinner

On Wednesday 18th April, our club joined other clubs in Group 2 for a celebratory dinner at the Beltana Bowls Club.
The evening began with a brief talk from each of the current presidents and president-elects. After dinner, we heard from our guest speaker, Mark Smalley from the Salvation Army, who is the outreach person for the homeless in the greater Hobart region. His role is to form relationships with the homeless with the aim of finding them accommodation. He spends time looking in areas where homeless might be staying (eg caves, bushes) and to help their immediate needs. As the trust develops and as places become available, he tries to find them accommodation.
He uses an index to help identify those most in need. The Vulnerable Index Survey identifies and rates certain aspects of a person’s situation and forms the basis for a decision on urgency and type of assistance that they need. As a consequence of the Rotary Club of Kangaroo Bay folding they have given $2,000 toward our joint fundraising to purchase street swags. This means that we can purchase the full order of 100 street swags.

Quiz Night: Street Swags

On Saturday night we held our quiz night to purchase street swags for the homeless in Hobart. We held the quiz night at the Lenah Valley Community Hall with Phil Dalwood as the quiz master.

We had a great turn out for the evening. Phil Dalwood and the club’s committee did a magnificent job in providing an entertaining time.
We raised approximately $1,600 or 26 street swags.

Guest speaker: Kristin Schwartz on Royal Guide Dogs of Tasmania

Kristin Schwartz and her guide dog, Dexter were our guest speakers. She showed us a video on a client’s perspective on having a guide dog, and shared some interesting facts. At the moment Royal Guide Dogs have two new puppies that are 8 weeks old and have started training already. At 18 months, Volunteers keep the puppies and take them too many places in the wider community. Currently there are approx. 22 working dogs in Tasmania

Guest speakers: Ian and Margaret Headlam on the School of St Jude

Tasmanian Rotarians Ian and Margaret Headlam spent 2009 at the School of St Jude, Margaret as a teacher librarian and Ian as Maintenance Manager. The Northern Tanzanian charity funded school was established in 2002 through the initiative of Gemma Rice (now Sisia) with the support of her local Rotary club and friends. It is now Africa’s largest charity school with 1,500 students and 350 local Tanzanian staff. The school has strict intake criteria with only the poorest, high intelligence and one student per family being accepted.

Family of Rotary Day / Giving Day

Tracy, Anita, Warwick and Mandy travelled to Ross for our annual Family of Rotary Day / Giving day. Rotary clubs of Evandale and Oatlands catered for the event.
Anita gave Peter Murfett our cheque to Rotary Foundation for around $1,950. Overall, the Tasmanian clubs raised around $85,000 on the day. In 3 years half of this amount will come back to our district (for matching grants, GSE, etc).
Rob Pennicott told us about his voyage and handed over a cheque for $264,804.81 to Peter Murfett for Polio Plus to end Polio globally.
Eddie Freeman created two wooden sculptures using chainsaws during the afternoon. One was an owl , the other was cube with a free rolling sphere inside.

Guest speaker: Magalena Lane on Australian Business arts Foundation

Magalena Lane from the Australian Business Arts Foundation talked about how the Australian Business Arts Foundation links the arts with Business and and grants and helps the Arts side of things with Marketing Workshops to help individuals and organisation create a brand Tasmania and the Arts.

Guest speaker: Professor Wolfgang Lenzen

Professor Wolfgang Lenzen is cycling around the world to raise money for 2 Rotary projects run by German Clubs. One project is fighting Aids in Uganda and the other is helping poor children in Ecuador go to school. Wolfgang recently retired as a Professor of Philosophy and has been cycling for more than 25 years. This tour includes 6 days in Tasmania, followed by Melbourne, Sydney and New Zealand.

Guest speaker: Pat Burton on Second Bite

Second Bite has been operating in southern Tasmania for six years and is about to extend operations into the North of the state. The aim of the organisation is to identify wastage or surplus in the food chain (from the ‘paddock to the plate’) and redistribute this to those in need. They serve around 60 non-profit organisations and provide food equivalent to 50,000 meals a month. Approximately 60 volunteers help the organisation on a regular basis and many of those are linked to Rotary. For example the Rotary Club of Sandy Bay collect unsold fruit from Salamanca Market each week and deliver to the Salvation Army. This is seen by their members as a real ground floor effort to help their local community. Second Bite are looking for help from our Club to provide some admin support in tasks such as collating and analysing statistics and providing a link between Rotary and the organisation.
