Meetings

Our club meets on most Wednesday nights at the New Sydney Hotel, Bathurst St, Hobart at 6pm to finish at 7:30pm.  We have chosen a pub as the venue for our meetings due to the informal nature that our club adopts.

Rotarians pay $4 to attend the meeting, with most attendees enjoying a beer and a pub meal for dinner at their own expense.  However, this is optional with food and drink purchased off the pub menu if so desired.

All visitors are welcome to attend, including children who can also become members of the club.

One of our former members initiated the concept of Rotababies / Rotakids into our club so members with children can be included (unless of course they want to come to our meetings to escape their kids!!).

Our weekly meetings can include any of the following:

  • Updates from Directors: the directors are from the board and inform the club on what is happening in their area as well as to coordinate upcoming activities.
  • Guest Speaker: a speaker is organised by one of members and usually speaks for 20 minutes. Past speakers has spoken on a range of interesting topics.
  • Fine session: this is a fun and social interlude where we ‘fine’ someone for something silly/happy/embarrassing that has occurred in their lives. This is only what one can afford, be it 5 cents or a couple of dollars. This fine money is accumulated for the year and donated to a chosen charity.
  • Heads & Tails: this is a simple and short game we play at the conclusion of the meeting in order to win a prize donated by a fellow member.
  • Inductions: this is where we induct new members into our club.

We also have alternative meetings, including:

  • Club assemblies (or committee meetings): there is no guest speaker and we instead use that time to generate new ideas and plan for future events.
  • Group forums: this is a combined meeting with about 5 Rotary clubs. The purpose is to assist with larger event coordination and networking between members.
  • Vocational visits: we replace the entire meeting with a visit elsewhere (usually a workplace). Past examples are: Hobart rivulet tour, optometrist, CCAMLAR (Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources), Real tennis (Royal tennis) and Fire station.
  • Social activities: we replace the entire meetings with a social event of some kind. Past examples include: pizza and karaoke evening at member’s house, ten-pin bowling, zone-3, and the cinema.

If you are interested in coming along to one of our meetings, please contact Warwick on 0447 500 829 or Melanie on 0429 832 757 or send us an email.  We would love to see you there!!!
