Guest speaker: James Wood on Tasmanian Seed Safe Program

October 24th, 2011 · Club meetings

We welcomed James Wood as our guest speaker from the Tasmanian Seed Safe Program. This program was initiated because one-fifth of plants are at risk of extinction and in Australia. The Seed Safe program allows plants to colonise in new areas and last thousands of years in storage. It started in Tasmania in 2005 and is a non-funded program but supported by the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens

Guest speaker: Kevin Shadbolt on Rotary Foundation

October 17th, 2011 · Club meetings

Kevin Shadbolt spoke on the Rotary Foundation. The Rotary Foundation (RF) operates exclusively for charitable and educational purposes. 3 years after a donation the money is available to use: 50% for world funds, 50% for district designated funds. World funds are used for polio eradication, education and humanitarian programs. In 1988 Rotary began a enormous world wide program to eradicate polio from the world (PolioPlus). Today polio remains in 4 countries: Nigeria, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Examples of educational programs are: Peace Fellowships, Ambassadorial Scholarships, Group Study Exchange. Examples of humanitarian programs are: matching grants and district simplified grants.

Money to RF can be donated in various ways. Clubs donate via the Annual Giving day, members donate by becoming a Centurion, or a benefactor in a will. Anyone can donate and become a Paul Harris Fellow.

Giving sight in Nepal: Using a mix of district simplified grants and matching grants an eye surgery team was sent to Hetauda in Nepal earlier this year. They visited a town near Hetauda to treat eye infections and those with cataracts were sent to Hetauda to have them removed. While there Rotary identified a school that has appalling access to good drinking water. Through the use of water tanks and plumbing they significantly improved access to the School’s drinking water. Guest speaker: Grant Herring

October 10th, 2011 · Club meetings

Our guest speaker tonight was Grant Herring who is employed by the Salvation Army to run programs associated with the justice system.  The Salvos have a strong sense of responsibility to guide those with addictions such as drugs, alcohol and gambling.  Risdon Prison’s “Breaking the Cycle” campaign is ambitious as it is a 10 year plan supported by the state government.  However it will bring change to how the community think about justice.  Most people are unaware that 1 prisoner = $260/day + $90,000 to get them there in the first place and the community don’t get much back from that money at the moment.  ” Breaking the Cycle” is working toward making the community more aware of justice issues and bridging the gap.

Vocational Visit: Fire Station

August 29th, 2011 · Club meetings

Tonight we visited the fire station head office in Hobart instead of holding our normal meeting.

We started with a tour of the museum that held some finely restored fire fighting equipment including an old water cart and fire engines from different decades.

We then went outside to check out the fire engines, including a new hydraulic platform truck. They showed us the very expensive but cool thermal camera.

After this we went up to the dispatch room. This control room is where emergency calls are taken and to control the brigades.
