Guest Speaker: Ben Wood on combating malaria in Uganda

July 25th, 2011 · Club meetings

Tonight’s guest speaker was Ben Wood who spoke of combating malaria in South Western Uganda. He is helping raise funds to implement basic preventative measures against malaria. Currently there are not enough malaria medications or treated nets to go around. Consequently the number of children and pregnant women becoming infected is very high. He is helping education communities to use their existing supplies more effectively and to help them properly understand what malaria is and how it is spread. He is also helping to reduce the number of stagnant water sources in order to reduce the breeding opportunities for the mosquito.

Club Visioning

July 18th, 2011 · Club meetings

Vision Statement Clarification: we are looking at a short version and a longer statement. Members were torn between 3 of the longer versions – this will be taken back for revision at a later date.  The consensus from club members is that is on the right track on where we want to club to be focused on over the next 5 years.   Storm the Stage will be revised after the State Final to look at if this is something the club would like to continue.  Youth Exchange was not a popular choice on the strategic plan however a small committee will investigate further. Anita Orchard and Melanie Parsons have put their hands up so far.

Next step:

We need members to put their hands up to look at an action plan under each directorship.

Group 2 Forum

July 12th, 2011 · Club meetings

Tonight we had a Group 2 Forum instead of our usual weekly meeting.  The Group 2 Forum contains the Rotary Clubs of Lindisfarne, City Central Hobart, Kangaroo Bay, Salamanca, and Sullivan’s Cove.  Tracy Dance is the Assistant Governor for Group 2.

The forum was held at Parliament House courtesy of Vanessa Goodwin.  We started at 6pm with some socialising before heading on tour of parliament house.  The tour included the original House of Assembly chamber, and current two houses of parliament and the museum.   After the tour and more socialising, Robert Manion treated us to the song “Hallelujah”.  Thank you Robert for agreeing to sing for us a such short notice and after performing yesterday in Storm The Stage and the Festival of Voices.

Jane Bennett, who spoke at the District Assembly, spoke again on her perspective as  someone outside of Rotary but whose life has intertwined with Rotary.  District Governor Peter Murfett gave a speech on his vision of Rotary into the future, including the five avenues of service.

Unfortunately just after desserts, the fire alarm interrupted proceedings and we were forced to evacuate the building.  Some of club were quite excited to see the firemen and their fire truck.

Guest speaker: Jenny Kerrison on Nursing in Bangladesh

June 28th, 2011 · Club meetings

Tonight’s guest speaker was Jenny Kerrison (also a Rotarian from the Rotary Club of North Hobart).  She spoke of her recent experience of nursing in Bangladesh.  She did a study of nursing care involving the Kumudini Hospital in the city of Mirzapur (North west of Dhaka).  Jenny talked about the country of Bangladesh and of the city of Mirzapur.  Most of the population is Muslim but the area around the Kumudini Hospital is Hindu.  There are high rates of illteracy and mortality.  Most of the employment is in agriculture and garment making.

Kumudini Hospital is a private, not-for-profit hospital.  It has 750 beds with segregated wards, but has no intensive care.  It was established in 1943 by P R Shaha.  The hospital has a fistula ward to help with those suffering this debilitating condition around childbirth.  The staff make their own gauze squares and roll their own cotton wool.  Their facilities are run down and old; they still use blackboards, use very old & out of date nursing books, and some of their classes are outside due to lack of space.  Jenny was able to receive a grant from the Australia High Commissioner for $30,000 for a new nursing lab for midwifery training.  She is looking at getting more volunteer nurses from Australia to assist in training up the local nurses.

Fundraising BBQ at Harven Norman

June 25th, 2011 · Fundraising

Today we held a fundraising BBQ outside Harvey Norman from 11am to 4pm.  Harvey Norman was holding a special sale and we anticipated selling a high level of sausages.  Unfortunately this was not the case and we only made around $250 as we had bought too many sausages.  We had a good time and if we do it again at Harvey Norman we will plan it differently.

We did a good job of organising the BBQ as we only were notified of it on Wednesday.  Thank you to all who helped out, including Cassi and Hannah.

Guest Speaker: Christine Coughanowr on the Derwent Estuary Program

May 16th, 2011 · Club meetings

Tonight’s guest speaker was Christine Coughanowr from the Derwent Estuary Program.  She talked about the various issues that affect the Derwent River from above Bridgewater to the Bruny Island / O’Possum Bay.  Some of the main problems include pollution, both toxic chemicals and high levels of organic matter and introduced species.  It was reassuring to know that they constantly identify areas that are unsafe to use or fish from, and that things are slowly improving in the river.  She told us of the programs to help endangered handfish that only occurs in Tasmania, and penguin colonies along the shores south of Hobart.
